If you purchased your home between January 1 and December 31 of 2010, you can now file your Homestead Exemption. Homestead Exemption protects homeowners from unforeseen circumstances, preventing the forced sale of a property due to difficulties with creditors or if one spouse should die, and also provide a discount in annual property taxes.
Most counties have their Homestead Exemption form available on their website, which you can download, complete and mail-in.
As a note, if you have received a Tax Statement and your mortgage is escrowing funds for taxes from your monthly payments, you should forward the statement to your mortgage company so they are put on notice and confirm their paying the taxes.
Remember: Filing your Homestead Exemption is FREE (throw away any offers from companies that charge for the service), but the deadline for filing your Homestead Exemption is April 30th.
